The children rarely stayed in the same place for very long.

One moved toward the water while the other stopped to examine the sand. Their parents followed behind, sometimes carrying them, sometimes waiting, sometimes laughing before anyone else understood why.

The beach offered no direction that morning. There were no paths to follow, only the tide moving in and out and four people finding their own way between the waves and the shore.

Some photographs happened in motion. Others appeared in the brief pauses: a hand reaching upward, a child resting on a shoulder, two parents watching the small distance growing between themselves and the children who had already begun to run ahead.
